Snook: These hard-fighting fish are a Key Largo staple. Known for their distinctive black lateral line and protruding lower jaw, snook are ambush predators that love to hang around structure. They're most active during the warmer months, making them a perfect target for our Quick Cast trips. Anglers love snook for their explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps when hooked.
Grey Snapper: Also known as mangrove snapper, these tasty fish are abundant in Key Largo's inshore waters. They're smart and can be a bit finicky, which makes catching them all the more rewarding. Grey snapper tend to school up, so when you find them, you're in for some fast action. They're available year-round, but the bite really heats up in the summer months.
Sea Trout: Spotted seatrout are a favorite among light tackle anglers. They're known for their beautiful spotted pattern and their willingness to hit artificial lures. Sea trout love to hang out over grass flats and near drop-offs. When the water's clear, sight-fishing for these guys can be an absolute blast. They're most active in the cooler months, but you can catch them year-round in Key Largo.
Redfish: With their copper-colored scales and distinctive spot near the tail, redfish are a prized catch in Key Largo. These bulldogs of the flats put up a great fight on light tackle. They love to cruise in shallow water, often with their tails sticking out of the water â a sight that gets every angler's heart racing. Fall is prime time for redfish, but you can catch them throughout the year.

Local Grown Charters and Captain Andrew Atwill was a top notch choice for fishing the inshore reefs. He took me out and we caught tons of mangrove and yellowtail snapper. Andrew landed a nice black grouper but it was just undersized and released. It was clear to me that Andrew was not only extremely knowledgable about the fishing and abundance of wildlife in Florida Keys but he also had a ton of respect for the habitat itself. His boat was extremely clean and his gear was very well-maintained. Captain Andrew also filleted my catches and gave me a filleting tutorial. Delicious dinner that evening!! I highly recommend Local Grown Charters and Captain Atwill if you're ever near Key Largo. If I ever return I'd love to go on a backcountry tarpon outing with him!

Captain Drew was great! My wife and I enjoyed our last evening in the Keys catching fish left and right with Capt Drew and his first mate Dane. They both did a fantastic job keeping our hooks baited and lines in the water. Caught many species of fish including a huge Permit that made the entire trip! Then ended the charter with a sunset boat ride back. I would highly recommend Captain Drew!!

Crevalle jacks are the bulldogs of Key Largo waters. These hard-fighting fish typically run 3-15 pounds, but monsters over 30 aren't unheard of. Look for them busting bait on the surface - the feeding frenzy is a sight to behold. They'll hit just about anything that moves, from topwater lures to live bait. Jacks are around year-round but really fire up in summer. These fish are pure muscle and will test your stamina. They're not known for their eating quality, but the sheer power and endurance make them a blast to catch. Anglers love them for the nonstop action and brutal fights. Here's a local tip: when you see birds diving, there's likely a school of jacks underneath. Cast into the melee and hang on tight. Jack fishing is all about the adrenaline rush.

Grey snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are a staple of Key Largo fishing. These tasty fish typically run 1-3 pounds inshore, but offshore monsters can top 20 pounds. Look for them around any structure - mangroves, docks, reefs, wrecks. They're opportunistic feeders, so live shrimp or small baitfish work great. Grey snapper are crafty - they'll often steal your bait without getting hooked. Light tackle and a stealthy approach are key. Summer is prime time as they gather to spawn. Anglers love targeting them for their clever nature and excellent table quality. The meat is white, flaky, and delicious. Here's a tip: when you find one, there's usually more. Anchor up and chum to keep a school around. Grey snapper aren't the biggest, but they're one of the tastiest fish in the Keys.

Redfish are a prized catch in Key Largo's shallow waters. These copper-colored bruisers average 5-10 pounds but can top 40. Look for them tailing on shallow flats or cruising mangrove shorelines, often in just inches of water. They're suckers for live bait like shrimp or crabs, but will also crush artificial lures. Fall is prime time as big schools gather to spawn. Redfish are known for powerful runs - they'll test your drag and your arms. Sight fishing for them is a real thrill, spotting that bronze flash and making the perfect cast. They're excellent table fare too, with a sweet, mild flavor. Here's a tip: when you see a school, cast beyond them and drag your bait into their path. Redfish aren't the jumpiest fish, but their bulldogging fights make them a favorite for anglers of all levels.

Sea trout, or speckled trout, are a favorite target in Key Largo's inshore waters. These silvery fish with distinctive spots typically run 1-3 pounds, but gator trout over 5 pounds aren't uncommon. Look for them over grass flats and along channel edges, especially early morning or evening. They're aggressive feeders, striking both live bait and artificial lures. A popping cork rig with a shrimp is deadly. Winter is prime time as big fish school up in deeper holes. Trout are known for their soft mouths, so a gentle hookset is crucial. Anglers love them for their willingness to bite and delicate flavor on the table. Here's a local trick: drag your bait across the bottom, then pause - the trout often hit on the fall. Sea trout fishing is fast-paced and fun for all skill levels.

Snook are one of the most sought-after gamefish in Key Largo. These sleek predators average 1-2 feet long but can reach over 4 feet. Look for them around mangroves, docks, and other structure in shallow inshore waters. Snook are ambush hunters, so cast your lure or bait right up against cover. They're known for explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps when hooked. Spring and fall are prime seasons as snook move between inshore and offshore areas. The fight is half the fun - snook will use every trick to shake the hook. For table fare, smaller ones under 28 inches taste best. Here's a local tip: use a circle hook with live bait to improve your hookup ratio and make releases easier. Snook fishing takes some skill, but landing a big one is a real rush.
