Snook: These hard-fighting fish are a Florida favorite. Snook love to hang around mangroves and structures, so we'll be targeting them in spots where they ambush their prey. They're known for explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps, making them a blast to catch on light tackle. Spring and fall are prime times for snook, but we catch them year-round in Key Largo.
Grey Snapper: Don't let their size fool you – these feisty fish punch above their weight class. Also known as mangrove snapper, they're abundant in the Keys and make for some fantastic eating. We often find them around reefs and rocky bottoms. They're quick biters, so staying alert is key when targeting these tasty fish.
Sea Trout: Spotted seatrout are a staple of inshore fishing in Florida. They're fun to catch and great for anglers of all skill levels. We typically find them over grass flats and around drop-offs. Their soft mouths make for an exciting fight, requiring finesse to land successfully. Winter months often see larger "gator" trout in the area.
Redfish: With their distinctive spot near the tail, redfish are a prized catch in Key Largo waters. They love shallow flats and mangrove shorelines, often tailing in mere inches of water. Fall is a great time for big bull reds, but we catch them year-round. Their powerful runs will test your drag and your arms!
Crevalle Jack: If you're after a pure, brutal fight, jacks are your fish. These speedsters hit hard and run fast, often found in schools terrorizing bait pods. We might spot them busting bait on the surface – a thrilling sight that gets every angler's heart racing. They're available year-round but seem to be most active in the warmer months.

Local Grown Charters and Captain Andrew Atwill was a top notch choice for fishing the inshore reefs. He took me out and we caught tons of mangrove and yellowtail snapper. Andrew landed a nice black grouper but it was just undersized and released. It was clear to me that Andrew was not only extremely knowledgable about the fishing and abundance of wildlife in Florida Keys but he also had a ton of respect for the habitat itself. His boat was extremely clean and his gear was very well-maintained. Captain Andrew also filleted my catches and gave me a filleting tutorial. Delicious dinner that evening!! I highly recommend Local Grown Charters and Captain Atwill if you're ever near Key Largo. If I ever return I'd love to go on a backcountry tarpon outing with him!

Captain Drew was great! My wife and I enjoyed our last evening in the Keys catching fish left and right with Capt Drew and his first mate Dane. They both did a fantastic job keeping our hooks baited and lines in the water. Caught many species of fish including a huge Permit that made the entire trip! Then ended the charter with a sunset boat ride back. I would highly recommend Captain Drew!!

Crevalle jacks are the bullies of Key Largo's inshore waters. These bruisers usually run 5-15 pounds but can top 30 pounds. Look for them busting bait on the surface - the feeding frenzy is hard to miss. Jacks roam everywhere from flats to offshore, but they love hanging around bridges and channels. They'll hit just about any lure or bait, especially if it's moving fast. Once hooked, jack crevalle fight like freight trains. Be ready for screaming runs and prepare for a long battle. While not the best eating, pound-for-pound they're some of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean. To get in on the action, keep an eye out for diving birds. Then cast a topwater plug or silver spoon into the melee and hang on tight. Tangling with a big jack will test both you and your tackle.

Grey snapper, or mangrove snapper, are a staple of inshore fishing here in Key Largo. These tasty fish usually run 1-3 pounds but can get up to 10+ pounds offshore. Look for them around any structure - mangroves, docks, reefs - in 10-30 feet of water. They're most active at dawn and dusk, especially around the full moon when they spawn. Grey snapper are prized for their flaky white meat, but they can be tricky to catch. They're wary and quick to spook. For best results, use light tackle and small hooks with live shrimp or cut bait. Chum heavily to get them fired up. Once you hook one, get ready for a surprisingly strong fight as they try to dive back into cover. Landing a limit of these "mangos" makes for some fantastic eating later.

Redfish are one of the hardest-fighting inshore species in Key Largo. Most are in the 5-10 pound range, but bull reds over 20 pounds aren't uncommon. Look for them tailing on shallow flats or cruising mangrove shorelines, often in just inches of water. Fall and winter are prime seasons as reds school up. Sight fishing for these copper-colored brutes is a rush - watch for their distinctive spot near the tail. They'll crush topwater lures, jigs, or live bait. Once hooked, redfish make powerful runs and dig deep. Their firm flesh is excellent on the grill or blackened. For consistent action, work gold spoons or scented soft plastics along mangrove edges on a falling tide. Just be ready to muscle them out of the roots. Landing a big red is always a thrill, so don't pass up a chance at these bulldogs of the flats.

Sea trout, or spotted seatrout, are a favorite target for light tackle anglers in Key Largo. Most run 15-20 inches, but gator trout over 5 pounds aren't uncommon. You'll find them cruising grass flats and channels in 2-6 feet of water, especially early morning and evening. They're most active in cooler months from fall through spring. Trout are fun to catch on artificial lures - try a soft plastic under a popping cork or work a topwater plug for exciting strikes. They also readily take live shrimp or small baitfish. Sea trout put up a decent fight and often make spectacular leaps when hooked. Their mild, flaky meat is excellent eating too. For consistent action, drift the flats and cast to potholes or depth changes. A limit of keeper trout makes for a tasty fish fry back at the dock.

Snook are one of the most sought-after gamefish in Key Largo. These sleek predators typically range from 24-36 inches and put up an incredible fight. You'll find them lurking around mangroves, docks, and other structures in shallow inshore waters. Spring and fall are prime seasons as snook move between their spawning and wintering grounds. Anglers love targeting snook for their explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps when hooked. Their firm white meat is also excellent eating when in season. To up your chances, try working a soft plastic jerkbait or live bait like pilchards along mangrove shorelines during incoming tides. Just be ready to muscle them away from the roots - snook are masters at cutting you off in cover. Landing a big snook is always a thrill, so don't pass up a chance to tangle with these bruisers.
