Snook: These hard-fighting linesiders are the rock stars of inshore fishing. Known for their explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps, snook will test your skills and your gear. They love to hang around structure, so we'll be targeting mangrove edges and dock pilings. The best part? Snook fishing is hot year-round in Key Largo, with peak seasons in spring and fall.
Grey Snapper: Don't let their size fool you â these crafty fish punch well above their weight class. Also known as mangrove snapper, these tasty critters are abundant in our waters and make for excellent table fare. They're quick biters with a soft mouth, so a gentle touch is key when setting the hook. We'll show you the tricks to outsmarting these wily fish.
Sea Trout: If you're looking for consistent action, sea trout are your go-to target. These speckled beauties are often found in schools, so when you find one, you've usually found many. They're suckers for a well-presented artificial lure or live shrimp under a popping cork. The "gator" trout (the big ones) are a prized catch and make for some fantastic photos.
Redfish: With their copper-colored scales and distinctive spot near the tail, redfish are a sight to behold. These bulldogs of the flats are known for their powerful runs and stubborn fights. We'll be scanning the shallows for their telltale tails sticking up as they root for crabs and shrimp in the grass flats. Landing a "red" is always a highlight of any inshore trip.
Crevalle Jack: Want to feel like you're battling a freight train? Hook into a crevalle jack and hold on tight! These hard-charging fish are pure muscle and will put your stamina to the test. While they're not known for their table quality, the sheer thrill of the fight makes them a favorite among sport fishermen. When a school of jacks blows up on bait, it's a sight you won't soon forget.

Captain Andrew and his first mate, Rob were awesome! Very friendly, professional and courteous. They made sure we were comfortable and having a good time. We chose the 2 hour trip which is perfect for us. Drew was very efficient in getting us to the reef where we fished and maximized our time there to catch a good number of fish. He and Rob made the trip very enjoyable and safe. I highly recommend Andrew and Locla Grown Charters!!

Local Grown Charters and Captain Andrew Atwill was a top notch choice for fishing the inshore reefs. He took me out and we caught tons of mangrove and yellowtail snapper. Andrew landed a nice black grouper but it was just undersized and released. It was clear to me that Andrew was not only extremely knowledgable about the fishing and abundance of wildlife in Florida Keys but he also had a ton of respect for the habitat itself. His boat was extremely clean and his gear was very well-maintained. Captain Andrew also filleted my catches and gave me a filleting tutorial. Delicious dinner that evening!! I highly recommend Local Grown Charters and Captain Atwill if you're ever near Key Largo. If I ever return I'd love to go on a backcountry tarpon outing with him!

Captain Drew was great! My wife and I enjoyed our last evening in the Keys catching fish left and right with Capt Drew and his first mate Dane. They both did a fantastic job keeping our hooks baited and lines in the water. Caught many species of fish including a huge Permit that made the entire trip! Then ended the charter with a sunset boat ride back. I would highly recommend Captain Drew!!

Drew was a great captain! We had a great time with some beginners who were hesitant to come. Drew was great helping all of us and we had a great time. Only regret was not doing a longer trip! It's gorgeous out there and the fish were biting! Highly recommend using Local Grown of you want to go on a fishing trip.

Crevalle jacks are the bulldogs of Key Largo's inshore waters. These powerful fish typically range from 5-20 pounds, with some monsters pushing 40+. You'll find them busting bait on the surface in open water, around bridges, or near channel edges. Jacks are aggressive feeders and will hit just about anything that moves. Live bait like pilchards works great, but they'll also smash topwater plugs, spoons, or jigs. What makes them fun to catch is their sheer strength and stamina â be ready for a long, hard fight. They're most active in warmer months, especially when bait schools are present. While not the best eating, jacks are catch-and-release superstars. Local tip: Watch for diving birds â they'll often lead you right to a school of feeding jacks. When you find them, cast beyond the school and retrieve quickly through the frenzy.
Grey snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are a staple of Key Largo inshore fishing. These tasty fish usually run 1-3 pounds, though bigger ones aren't uncommon. You'll find them around reefs, docks, and mangroves in depths from 5 to 80 feet. They're opportunistic feeders, so live shrimp or small baitfish work great. For artificials, try jigs or soft plastics. Grey snapper are known for their sharp eyesight and can be finicky, so use light tackle and fluorocarbon leaders. They're most active at dawn and dusk, especially during summer spawning season. What makes them fun to catch is their initial burst of speed when hooked â be ready for it. These fish make excellent table fare with their white, flaky meat. Local trick: When fishing deeper water, try a knocker rig with just enough weight to reach bottom. Let it sit, and be patient â snapper often inspect bait before committing.
Redfish are a hard-fighting inshore species that'll test your tackle in Key Largo waters. These copper-colored beauties typically run 5-15 pounds, with some bulls pushing 30+. You'll find them tailing in shallow flats, often in water so skinny their backs are exposed. They love structure, so target mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, and grass flats. Redfish are opportunistic feeders â live bait like shrimp or pinfish works well, but they'll also crush artificial lures. Soft plastics, spoons, and topwater plugs are all effective. What makes redfishing exciting is sight casting to tailing fish in clear water. They're known for their strong initial run, so be ready when you hook up. Fall and winter are prime seasons when water temps cool. Local secret: On sunny days, look for their golden sides flashing as they feed â it's a dead giveaway to their location.
Sea trout, or spotted seatrout, are a favorite among Key Largo anglers. These fish typically range from 1-5 pounds, with some gators pushing 10 pounds or more. You'll find them in grassy flats and channels, usually in 3-6 feet of water. They're most active in cooler months but can be caught year-round. Sea trout are aggressive feeders, making them fun to catch on both live bait and artificial lures. Try soft plastics, topwater plugs, or live shrimp under a popping cork. These fish have soft mouths, so set the hook gently. What makes them great for all skill levels is their willingness to bite and their tasty, delicate meat. Best fishing is often early morning or late evening. Local tip: Look for subtle changes in the grass flats â trout love to hang out where sparse grass meets thicker patches.
Snook are a prized catch in Key Largo's inshore waters. These sleek, powerful fish typically run 1-3 feet long and put up an exciting fight. You'll find them lurking around mangroves, docks, and other structure, especially during warmer months. Snook are ambush predators, so work your lure or bait near cover. They're known for their selective feeding, so matching the hatch is key. Live bait like pilchards or pinfish works well, but artificial lures can be just as effective if fished properly. Snook have a delicate mouth, so use a circle hook to improve your hookup ratio. The meat is excellent eating, but be sure to check current regulations. For the best action, fish early morning or evening on a moving tide. Pro tip: If you see snook rolling on the surface, they're likely feeding - cast beyond them and work your bait through the area.
