Looking for some fast-paced fishing action without spending your whole day on the water? This 2-hour inshore fishing adventure with Local Grown Charters hits the sweet spot for anglers who want maximum fish-catching excitement in minimum time. Captain Andrew and his crew know exactly where to find the fish in Key Largo's productive inshore waters, and they'll keep you moving from spot to spot until your rods are bending. Whether you're traveling with kids, trying to squeeze in some fishing between other vacation activities, or just prefer shorter trips, this quick-fire fishing experience delivers serious results. You'll target some of Florida Keys' most popular species while cruising through scenic backcountry waters that make this area famous among anglers worldwide.
This isn't your typical lazy-day fishing trip where you anchor up and wait for something to happen. Captain Andrew runs a high-energy operation that maximizes every minute of your 2-hour window. The moment you step aboard, the team gets you rigged up and headed to the first productive spot. If the fish aren't cooperating at one location, you'll quickly move to another - sometimes hitting 3-4 different areas during your trip. The inshore waters around Key Largo offer incredible variety, from shallow grass flats where snook ambush baitfish to deeper channels where snappers stack up around structure. You'll fish from a well-maintained boat equipped with quality rods, reels, and tackle, so all you need to bring is your fishing license and enthusiasm. The captain and first mate handle all the technical stuff - finding fish, baiting hooks, netting catches, and even filleting your take-home dinner at the end.
The beauty of inshore fishing around Key Largo lies in the variety of techniques you'll use throughout the trip. Depending on conditions and what's biting, you might find yourself casting live shrimp under mangrove overhangs for snook, bouncing jigs along grass bed edges for sea trout, or dropping baits near coral heads for snapper. The captain reads the water, wind, and tides to determine the best approach for each spot. Light tackle keeps the action exciting - even smaller fish put up a great fight on the gear used here. You'll learn proper casting techniques, how to work different baits, and when to set the hook. The crew moves efficiently between productive zones, from the shallow backcountry flats to nearshore reefs, always staying in waters protected from rough seas. This keeps the ride comfortable for families while accessing some seriously productive fishing grounds that many visitors never see.
"The trip was really good. The captain kept moves us very fast from a couple spots that were not hitting well. He did a good job of finding the fish, and helped show us how to best catch them. We had a few kids on the boat and they had a great time too!" - Devin
"Captain Andrew was great, we only booked the 2 hour tour but were able to catch several fish to take home, including a 4.5 ft Barracuda, which was fun to catch." - Mario
"Captain Drew was great! My wife and I enjoyed our last evening in the Keys catching fish left and right with Capt Drew and his first mate Dane. They both did a fantastic job keeping our hooks baited and lines in the water. Caught many species of fish including a huge Permit that made the entire trip! Then ended the charter with a sunset boat ride back. I would highly recommend Captain Drew!!" - Ace
Snook are the crown jewel of Florida inshore fishing, and Key Largo's waters hold some beauties. These ambush predators love hanging around mangrove shorelines, dock pilings, and bridge structures where they can dart out to grab unsuspecting baitfish. Snook have that distinctive black lateral line and put up an amazing fight with multiple jumps and strong runs. They're most active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours, but you can catch them throughout the day around structure. What makes snook special is their explosive strike and acrobatic fighting style - they'll jump clear out of the water trying to throw your hook. The slot limit keeps things interesting, and a keeper snook makes excellent table fare with firm, white meat.
Grey snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are abundant year-round in these waters and perfect for anglers wanting consistent action. These smart fish require finesse - they'll inspect your bait carefully before committing, so light leaders and natural presentations work best. You'll find them around any structure: coral heads, dock pilings, channel edges, and mangrove roots. Grey snapper average 1-3 pounds but can grow much larger, and they're notorious for making long, determined runs when hooked. They're also fantastic eating, with firm white fillets that taste great grilled, fried, or baked. Kids love catching these fish because they bite readily once you figure out their preferences.
Sea trout patrol the grass flats and shallow waters throughout the Keys, making them a staple target for inshore trips. These beautiful fish have distinctive spotted patterns and prefer areas with good water movement over turtle grass beds. They're aggressive feeders that will hit live shrimp, artificial lures, and cut bait with enthusiasm. Sea trout average 1-2 pounds but can reach 4-5 pounds in these productive waters. They're relatively easy to catch once you locate them, making them perfect for beginning anglers and kids. The spring and fall months produce the most consistent action, though you can catch them year-round. Their delicate mouths mean you need to fight them carefully, but their mild, flaky meat makes them a favorite for the dinner table.
Redfish are the bulldozers of the flats - powerful, determined fighters that will test your tackle and technique. These copper-colored beauties cruise shallow waters looking for crabs,

Captain Andrew and his first mate, Rob were awesome! Very friendly, professional and courteous. They made sure we were comfortable and having a good time. We chose the 2 hour trip which is perfect for us. Drew was very efficient in getting us to the reef where we fished and maximized our time there to catch a good number of fish. He and Rob made the trip very enjoyable and safe. I highly recommend Andrew and Locla Grown Charters!!

Local Grown Charters and Captain Andrew Atwill was a top notch choice for fishing the inshore reefs. He took me out and we caught tons of mangrove and yellowtail snapper. Andrew landed a nice black grouper but it was just undersized and released. It was clear to me that Andrew was not only extremely knowledgable about the fishing and abundance of wildlife in Florida Keys but he also had a ton of respect for the habitat itself. His boat was extremely clean and his gear was very well-maintained. Captain Andrew also filleted my catches and gave me a filleting tutorial. Delicious dinner that evening!! I highly recommend Local Grown Charters and Captain Atwill if you're ever near Key Largo. If I ever return I'd love to go on a backcountry tarpon outing with him!

It's gorgeous out there and the fish were biting! Highly recommend using Local Grown of you want to go on a fishing trip.

Crevalle jacks are pure adrenaline on a fishing rod - these golden bulldozers will test your drag and your arms. Most jacks we catch run 3-8 pounds, but bigger ones up to 20 pounds show up regularly and will absolutely smoke your reel. Look for them around structure like bridges, reefs, and wrecks, but they also hunt in schools over grass flats and sandy areas. They're here year-round, but summer and fall bring the most consistent action. What guests love about jacks is their aggressive nature and incredible fight - pound for pound, few fish pull harder. They're not great table fare, so we usually release them to fight another day. The real excitement comes when you find a feeding school pushing bait to the surface with birds diving overhead. Pro tip: when you find them feeding, cast a silver spoon or fast-moving lure past the school and retrieve it quickly through the chaos - jacks love the chase and rarely miss a fast-moving target.

Grey snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are smart little fighters that keep things interesting on our trips. Most run 12-16 inches and maybe 1-2 pounds, though we occasionally hook bigger ones pushing 4-5 pounds around deeper structure. These copper-red fish with that dark eye stripe are opportunistic feeders that hang around docks, mangroves, and grass flats. They're active year-round but really turn on during warmer months when they move shallow to feed. What guests love about grey snapper is they're always willing to bite, making them perfect for kids and beginners. Plus, they're some of the best eating fish in these waters - sweet, flaky white meat that's hard to beat. They're also nocturnal, so late afternoon trips often produce the most action. Pro tip: use a 4/0 circle hook with live shrimp hooked through the tail, let it sink to the bottom, then reel up just a foot or two and wait.

Redfish are hands down one of the most exciting targets we chase in the shallow waters around Key Largo. These bronze-colored bruisers average 20-30 inches and are famous for that distinctive black eyespot near their tail. They love super shallow water - sometimes so shallow their backs stick out - around oyster bars, mangrove shorelines, and grass flats. Fall and spring give us the best shot at them when they're actively feeding in the shallows. What gets guests fired up about reds is their power - they'll peel drag and make long runs that test your tackle. They're also sight fishing targets, so you can actually watch them cruise and make perfect casts. The meat is excellent too, with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Year-round fishing is good, but cooler months often produce bigger fish. Here's the key: when you spot a red, cast well ahead of where it's heading and let your bait settle - they spook easily but once hooked, they fight like crazy.

Sea trout, or speckled trout, are one of our most consistent producers on the grass flats around Key Largo. These spotted beauties typically measure 14-18 inches and fight harder than their size suggests. They love shallow seagrass beds and sandy potholes in 2-4 feet of water, especially during cooler months when they school up in deeper channels. Fall through spring offers the best fishing, particularly on overcast days or during moving tides. What makes sea trout special is their willingness to hit both live bait and artificials - they're not picky eaters. Guests enjoy their spirited fight and the fact that they make excellent table fare with tender, mild-flavored meat. During winter, we find them in larger schools holding in deeper water around creek mouths. Local secret: work a soft plastic shrimp or jig head slowly across the grass beds right at first light - the bite can be phenomenal when conditions are right.

Snook are one of the most sought-after inshore fish around Key Largo. These sleek predators typically run 18-28 inches and love hanging around mangroves, docks, and creek mouths where they ambush prey. You'll spot them by that distinctive black lateral line running down their golden sides. They're incredibly structure-oriented, so we focus on bridges, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines in 2-6 feet of water. Spring through fall gives us the best action, especially around dawn and dusk when they're actively feeding. What makes snook so popular is their explosive strike and bulldogging fight - they'll make several powerful runs before giving up. The meat is fantastic too, with firm white flakes that taste great grilled. Here's a local tip: when working mangroves, cast your lure past the structure and retrieve it right along the edge - that's where they're waiting.
